Epsom Downs Racecourse: Heritage, Prestige and a Bold New Investment for 2026
Just a short drive from Fetcham Park, few sporting venues capture the spirit of British tradition quite like Epsom Downs Racecourse.
Set high on the Surrey Downs with sweeping countryside views, this world-famous venue has been at the heart of British sporting life for centuries – and now, with major new investment announced for 2026, it is preparing for an exciting new chapter.
A Racecourse Steeped in History
Horse racing at Epsom dates back to the 17th century, with the first recorded meeting taking place in 1661. Over the centuries, the course has become one of the most recognisable racecourses in the world, famed for its unique undulating track, dramatic turns and testing uphill finish.
Epsom Downs is, of course, synonymous with The Derby – first run in 1780 and named after Edward Smith-Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby. What began as a race between friends soon became one of the most prestigious contests in global horse racing, inspiring Derby races across the world.
The Derby: A Sporting Institution
To win The Derby is to earn a place in racing history. Run over a mile and a half, it is regarded as the ultimate test for elite three-year-old thoroughbreds, combining speed, stamina and temperament on one of the most demanding tracks in the sport.
For generations, royalty, racing enthusiasts and socialites have gathered on the Downs each June, making Derby Day one of Britain’s great sporting and social occasions.
A Major New Investment for 2026
In December 2025, The Jockey Club announced significant changes to the Betfred Derby Festival for 2026, reinforcing Epsom’s status as one of the premier destinations in British sport.
Highlights include:
- The Derby prize fund increased to £2 million
- £1 million awarded to the winner
- Prize money extended to horses finishing in the top ten
- The historic Coronation Cup moves to Saturday with a £1 million purse
- Introduction of the Tattenham Corner Stakes
- Enhancements to the overall visitor and race day experience
This investment demonstrates a clear ambition to modernise the festival while protecting the heritage that makes Epsom so special.
The Nescot Connection
In 2025, Julie Kapsalis MBE CEO & principle of North East Surrey College of Technology (Nescot), a prominent business and educational leader, was appointed to the Executive Committee of Epsom Downs Racecourse.
In this role, Julie helps oversee and guide the strategic direction, leadership, and operations of the historic racecourse, strengthening the relationship between Epsom Downs and Nescot.
Working alongside Racing to School, the racecourse has hosted Nescot students as part of a programme designed to introduce young people to Epsom’s racing heritage while showcasing career pathways in hospitality, events, business, sport and the wider racing industry.
Students have visited the racecourse for tailored learning experiences and behind-the-scenes insight into how a major sporting venue operates.
This strong relationship highlights how Epsom Downs is not only preserving history, but also investing in the next generation of local talent.
Why It Matters for Surrey
For Surrey residents, businesses and visitors, Epsom Downs remains one of the county’s most celebrated attractions, combining heritage, sport and hospitality in a truly iconic setting.
For clients at Fetcham Park, a visit to Epsom Downs offers the perfect blend of countryside elegance and quintessential British pageantry. Whether attending Derby Day, entertaining clients or simply enjoying the panoramic views, it is a memorable Surrey experience.
Timeless Heritage Meets Modern Ambition
Epsom Downs Racecourse has always been a place where tradition meets spectacle. With renewed investment, enhanced prize money and strong links to organisations such as Nescot, one of Britain’s most treasured sporting venues is set to thrive for generations to come.
