Why We Love Engagement Shoots

It’s always a joy when we open our inbox and discover that either a photographer or a couple soon to be married at Fetcham Park have sent us a couple of sneaky peeks of their engagement portraits. It certainly helps the mounting excitement as we prep for each celebration, as well as giving us an insight into the style and personalities of our couples.

Of course, we also love engagement shoots because these moments captured on camera can give you a sense of what it’s like to be professionally photographed for the very first time. It’s a strange thing to pose romantically or have a lens trained on you for eight hours, so it’s worthwhile familiarising yourself with this sensation.

Importantly, engagement sessions also give you the chance to bond with your wedding photographer. This is the person who will be tailgating you all day, so it’s good to establish a relationship with them and feel comfortable in their presence, as well as giving you confidence in them and their work. By having an engagement shoot, you’ll also develop a sort of verbal shorthand so that your photographer can easily direct you without having to explain everything for the first time.

Most of all though, we love engagement sessions because they give you a precious opportunity to take a moment out from your hectic lives and manic wedding planning. They’re a lovely, relaxed contrast to the formality of your subsequent wedding photos. They give you the chance to just enjoy each other’s company, to revel in the moment and take stock of this part of your lives together. The cusp of newlywed life is fleeting and beautiful, so it’s quite lovely to have a professional photographer on hand to document it all for you.

For some, the images created during an engagement portrait session will go on to populate their wedding – be that in the invitations, a signing mounted image or thank you cards – so the photos from the day go on to have greater significance. For others, they are a personal record of a specific part of a relationship to be treasured in years to come.

We think engagement shoots are a fantastic way of documenting your journey from engagement through to married life. We know that they will help you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. And more than anything, we love seeing a few snaps before the big day to whet our appetite!
