Sight for Surrey Celebrates National Volunteers Week at Fetcham Park

Fetcham Park was delighted to host Sight for Surrey’s Volunteers Awards Evening during National Volunteers’ Week in June. The charity, based in Fetcham, chose the occasion to celebrate and reward their incredible network of volunteers.

Founded in 1922, Sight for Surrey is the only organisation in the county working with people who are visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or who have combined sight and hearing loss.

The charity delivers support to people with a sensory impairment to have choice and access to services such as transport, leisure, education, housing, health and employment.

Bob Hughes, Chief Executive of Sight for Surrey, said: “Our volunteers are absolutely essential to our work, so it was wonderful to recognise them at such a stunning venue during National Volunteers Week. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our volunteers and supporters, we can continue to make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Sight for Surrey’s volunteering roles include ‘Virtual Befrienders’ such as Michael, who explains: “This marvellous charity offers a lifeline to members of our community who may otherwise feel isolated. There are so many volunteer roles to choose from and signing up couldn’t be easier.”

Connie, age 13, explains how volunteers like Michael have helped her: “I want to be an occupational therapist when I grow up and the events held by Sight for Surrey have given me the support and encouragement to help me believe I can succeed.”

Fellow Surrey resident, Rhoda, credits the charity with enabling her to live an independent life and remain in her home of over 30 years: “Sight for Surrey’s Resource Centre has been of great use to me, with different aids helping me to continue with everyday tasks that are second nature to a sighted person.”

Fetcham Park House Manager, Kate Ainsworth, added: “It was a privilege to host Sight for Surrey’s Volunteers Awards Evening. The tireless work of the charity and its volunteers to support individuals in the community is inspiring.

“Fetcham Park has been a home-from-home for many local charities, businesses and organisations over the years, providing a fitting location to celebrate key moments, launches and events. We’re delighted that Sight for Surrey found the House to be the perfect venue to honour their incredible volunteers.”
